Missed 15 October? The FBR has extended the Tax Year 2026 return filing deadline to 31 October 2026 through Circular No. 04 of 2026-27. Who the extension covers, the full timeline, and how to use the extra days.
Missed the 15 October window? You have more time — but not much. The Federal Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to Friday, 31 October 2026. Here is exactly what was announced, who it covers, and how to use the extra days properly.
What FBR actually announced
Through Circular No. 04 of 2026-27, issued on 15 October 2026, the FBR extended the date of filing of income tax returns for tax year 2026 up to 31 October 2026, exercising its powers under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. The board acted on requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations, which cited delays in the issuance of return forms and heavy traffic and technical glitches on the Iris portal.
Who the extension covers — and who it does not
This detail trips people up every year, so read it carefully. The extension applies to persons who were originally required to file their returns by 30 September 2026 — individuals (salaried employees, freelancers, business individuals) and associations of persons (AOPs) — whose deadline had earlier been extended to 15 October through Circular No. 3 of 2026-27.
Companies are not covered by this extension. A company's return for Tax Year 2026 remains due by 31 December 2026 under the ordinary timetable.
The full timeline, in one place
- 30 September 2026 — original statutory deadline for individuals and AOPs
- 15 October 2026 — first extension (Circular No. 3 of 2026-27)
- 31 October 2026 — current deadline (Circular No. 04 of 2026-27)
- 31 December 2026 — filing deadline for companies
Use the extra two weeks well
An extension is breathing room, not a holiday — and the last two extensions both happened because Iris buckled under last-day traffic. Filing early in the window means shorter queues and time to fix problems before the 31st. Before you file:
- Reconcile your wealth statement with your bank statements and withholding certificates.
- Check the new form's granular requirements — employer-wise salary breakups and per-property rental figures.
- Confirm your business income, advance tax paid and any foreign remittances are all reflected.
- After filing, check that your name appears on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) within a few days.
Why 31 October is a hard stop
Missing the extended deadline exposes you to penalties under section 182 of the Income Tax Ordinance, and every day off the Active Taxpayers List costs money — higher withholding rates on bank profit, vehicle registration and property transactions, and lost filer benefits on your next deal. Extensions come through circulars, not promises; plan for 31 October to be final.
