Income Tax Return Filing Tax Year 2026 – Document Checklist

Tax Year 2026 covers everything you earned between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026 — and FBR's return form this year wants more detail than ever, from employer-wise salary breakups to per-property rental figures. Whether you're a salaried employee, running a business, part of an AOP, or filing for a company, missing even one document can mean a delayed return or an unwanted FBR notice. Here's the complete checklist, deadlines, and penalty details you need to file on time — and stay off the FBR's radar for all the wrong reasons.
Tax Year 2026 covers all income earned between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. FBR's Iris portal is already open for filing, and this year's return form asks for more granular detail than before — so getting your documents in order early matters more than ever.
What's new this year
The TY2026 return form requires employer-wise salary and tax deduction breakups instead of a single combined figure, per-property rental details rather than a lump total, and institution-wise investment records. Incomplete documentation is the most common reason returns get delayed or flagged for a notice.
Documents for individuals
Salaried employees, freelancers, and self-employed individuals should gather their CNIC, Iris login credentials, salary certificate (if salaried) or business income and expense ledger (if self-employed), bank statements for the full tax year, withholding certificates on salary and bank profit, proof of any investments, property purchase or rental documents, vehicle registration (1300cc and above), donation and Zakat receipts, foreign remittance proof if applicable, and last year's return for reference.
Documents for AOPs
Partnerships and family businesses filing as an AOP need the partnership deed with profit-sharing ratio, registration certificate, the AOP's own NTN certificate, all partners' CNICs, an authorization letter naming the representative partner, full-year bank statements, a profit and loss statement, withholding certificates, partners' capital accounts, a profit distribution summary, proof of business premises, and last year's return.
Documents for companies
Private and public limited companies registered with SECP need their NTN and incorporation certificate, Memorandum and Articles of Association, audited financial statements, full-year bank statements, withholding certificates for tax deducted and collected, advance tax challans, sales tax returns if STRN registered, a payroll summary, particulars of directors and shareholders holding 10% or more, a fixed asset schedule with depreciation, loan or related-party agreements where applicable, and last year's return.
Deadlines to remember
Individuals and AOPs must file by 30 September 2026. Companies must file by 31 December 2026. Filing early avoids the usual September rush on the Iris portal, and gives enough buffer to fix any discrepancy FBR flags before the deadline.
Penalties for missing the deadline
Missing the deadline triggers a penalty under Section 182 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, removal from the Active Taxpayer List, and higher withholding tax on your banking, vehicle, and property transactions going forward.
